Internet Terms
network, server, Internet, the World Wide Web (also called "the web"
or "www"), html, browser, search engine, link, url, modem, T1
Activity
1. Give the class the handout "Internet Terms of the Day" WITHOUT definitions.
2. Go through the terms one at a time and ask if anyone can define it for the group. It may be necessary to rephrase or clarify the definition.
3. Participants write each definition on their handouts. This should help to remember what the terms mean.
4. From their handwritten list they will create a document of their own.
Here's the
list of Internet Terms with its definitions:
network - two or more computers connected together
server - a computer that manages a network
Internet - a global network connecting millions of computers
the World Wide Web (also called "the web" or "www")
- a system of internet servers that support specially formatted documents, such
as html
html - the main language used to create documents on the web
browser - software used to locate and display web pages. Two examples
are Netscape and Internet Explorer.
search engine - software which helps locate web pages with information
the user is looking for. Examples: Google and AltaVista
link - a connection between one document and another, or between
different sections of a document, activated by clicking
url - the web address (stands for uniform resource locator)
modem - a device that enables a computer to transmit data over a phone
line
T1 line - a "dedicated" phone connection that transmits data
at high speeds
