Class Time:      Monday - Fridays 7:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.

Objective:        To acquire a basic understanding of how to operate a personal computer and use software packages for day-to-day office activities such as:

·         Writing Professional Documents (letters, resumes and cover letters)

·         Creating Graphics, Publications and Calendars

·         Organizing and creating basic data lists

Course Outline:

The basic curriculum centers around the use of Microsoft Office with heavy emphasis on Microsoft Word as a desktop publishing tool and advanced graphics and text editor.

What is a Computer?

Activity - Paint My Town

Brief instruction on saving files onto floppy disks (do this for each student during activities).

HW: 

Review Terms of the Day 1 vocabulary list.

Have students define Terms of the Day 1 for next class.

Have students write a brief reflection of their life for next class (1 to 2 handwritten pages in journal style).

Terms of the Day 1 (Briefly Review Homework)

Teach a brief lesson on Keyboarding Skills (correct posture, home finger position, using thumb for space bar, using shift key and the tab key).

HW: 

Review Terms of the Day 2 vocabulary list.

Have students define Terms of the Day 2 for next class. 

Distribute a simple sample cover letter and review parts of a professional letter.  Have students write a sample cover letter for next class.  Handwritten letters are fine.

Applying paragraph styles; inserting graphics; using header and footer; working with section breaks, page breaks, margins and columns; creating basic and complex tables; using mail merge.

Activity 1 - The Fives (Basic tables)

Activity 2  - Make Your Own Calendar/Schedule (table)

HW:  Distribute a sample Resume as a model (a simple chronological resume with two to three bullets per job).  Briefly review the format of the resume.  Emphasize that students must complete this HW for next week’s activity.   Have student create their own resume based on the sample.  Hand written resumes are fine.

Brief Lesson on using invisible tables to format resumes (and other documents).  Also touch upon bullets and the importance of using TAB characters as opposed to space bar.  Dedicate most of session to creating a draft resume.

Activity – Resume

HW:  Distribute information on obtaining a library card (NB Public Library) and signing up for computer usage at the library.  Have student obtain a library cards and take the mini-tutorial for internet access.  (Instructor Note:  Some students may hesitate to sign-up for a library card.  It is not mandatory.  Instead, encourage students to somehow gain access to a computer as they will need it for future HW assignments.)   Time permitting, have students complete their resume drafts for next class.

Review drafts of Resumes and suggest corrections (not so much grammar and spelling as format, style and positive phrasing of work experience).  Dedicate about 30 minutes of class time to finishing up drafts.

Activity 1 - My Name (work with graphics)

 

Activity 2 - Have students design an Invitation Card to a fun event like a baptism, birthday or school function.  Alternately, student may write a formal letter for use as in mail merge activity next week.

HW:  Distribute pre-reading on using Excel Worksheets.  Have student read and understand the material.

Also have student create a list of 10 professional for use in next week’s activity (or personal if no professional are available) contacts (Name, address, telephone, relationship, etc.)  Hand written lists are fine.

Have students use their Personal Network list as the basis for an Excel contacts list.  The invitation or letter is to be used

Activity - Mail Merge (to a mailing list of people)

HW:

Have student report on one activity in Cultural Unity, Inc. or their community.  They may, for example talk about how the English classes are progressing, the dance group’s last performance, the up and coming class trip.  Alternately, they may come up with a column on cooking and recipes, astrology or whatever interest they have.  The aim is to have material for next weeks’ Make a Newsletter activity.

Dedicate the entire class to this activity.

Life Skills:
Self awareness, building confidence, writing, envisioning goals and focusing on them.

Discuss What Do You Love to Do? assignment.

Finish up newsletter layout and publishing.

Fill out and review teacher and closing evaluations.  Answer any final questions and review any material that students had difficulty with.

Note:  All students should complete this activity.  Very important to closure of course work.
