Welcome
/ Bienvenidos
We are a
grassroots, volunteer-run organization created to address the
needs of the immigrant Latino population in the greater New
Brunswick area. Our goal is to empower
immigrants, both at the individual and community level, via English
classes and the promotion of Latin American art and culture.
Emphasizing
popular education techniques, Cultural Unity provides English
as a Second Language classes to persons of varying educational
backgrounds and different levels of English comprehension.
In addition to ESL classes we also have class offerings
in math (for GED preparation) and Spanish language arts (for students
seeking to increase their linguistic understanding). In the near
future we will expand our class offerings to include Spanish for
English-speakers, literature, and complete GED preparation.
Community
Development
Cultural
Unity believes that English class is a tool for community empowerment.
Based on student interests, we organizes information seminars
and workshops that provide useful information to the community
in both English and Spanish. Previous workshops have included
alcoholism, labor rights; domestic violence, Immigrant rights
and educational opportunities. By integrating workshops
into the class curriculum, we stress the Importance of using available
resources for community advancement. We also make great
efforts to inform our members about community events and workshops
offerings in the community.
Cultural
Activities
Organizational
activities are not limited to educational interests; the group
emphasizes the importance of practicing and celebrating cultural
traditions as a way to promote newly arrived immigrant communities.
Cultural Unity
has supported the formation of a dance group that performs traditional
folkloric dances of Mexico.
In addition, students are able to enjoy cultural programs at places
like Rutgers
University in field trips organized
throughout the year. Past trips have included a musical
presentations at World Culture Week at Rutgers
and a theater production in Spanish.
Leadership
Through these
educational and cultural activities and programs Cultural Unity's
seeks to create an environment in which students are able not
only to participate in their education, but also in the decision
making processes within the organization. By providing students
with this enabling power, Cultural Unity hopes to encourage responsibility
and increase proactive participation of students in relation to
education and other important issues affecting the
New Brunswick community.
